If you’re someone who frequents the beauty-specific corners of Instagram and YouTube, you’ve without a doubt seen silicone makeup sponges all over the place. Presented as an alternative to standard Beautyblender-types, the transparent, squishy plastic tools are supposedly super-effective at applying makeup smoothly without soaking up too much product. Another pro is that silicone makeup sponges are theoretically more hygienic, since the smooth plastic surface allows you to easily wash it. But how does it really stack up to the Beautyblender, arguably the internet’s most-beloved beauty tool? A YouTube video by beauty blogger and influencer Marianna Hewitt seeks to answer precisely that question.
In the video, Hewitt discusses her own love of the standard Beautyblender, noting that she has a tough time imagining doing her makeup without it. But in the name of science, Hewitt puts the silicone version to the test, using it to apply her foundation in a circular motion and then a “tapping” motion. To really show how the tool stacks up, she uses it on half of her face, applying the makeup to the other half with a Beautyblender, for a side-by-side comparison.
