When it comes to earrings, size matters. There’s those small, dainty diamonds that rest on a lobe for decades unnoticed, and then there’s colossal, watermelon-size danglers that demand attention. Both float in and out of popularity — and our jewelry boxes — but after witnessing the giant crystal ring clusters on Kaia Gerber’s ears at Tom Ford’s Fall 2018show in February, it’s safe to say larger-than-life hoops are having a major moment.
Mid-sized hoops of the moderately chunky gold variety peaked last summer when they cropped up on nearly every influencer under the sun, but if 2018 is poised to be a bigger and better year, then we should start embracing more substantial circular ear adornments. This shouldn’t be a difficult feat, given the wide assortment of reasonably-priced extra-large hoop options from brands like Cult Gaia, Pamela Love, Aurélie Bidermann and indie favorites Young Frankk, Odette New York and Machete. All of the above have options that can certainly replace the classic clean gold and silver slender-cut tubes with marble and tortoise shell loops, pearls, eye-grabbing sculptural details, hammered finishes and more.
